15-16 April

For those of you who kept your fingers crossed, I thank you! We finally found cats! Here’s how it happened… we started our afternoon drive, eyes peeled on the roads and bush for a sign of any feline movement. We headed towards Chitwa dam and found a herd of elephant slowly making their way towards the water. But we couldn’t stay as we’ve received good news over the radio; a female leopard has been spotted on Gowrie main heading west! We rushed towards the sighting, by the time we got there she was about to cross over to the west on triple M. but none the less we saw her and sat with her for a while. It was Karula, she was cent marking with her body and curiously looking around for any movement in the bushes. Shortly after she decided to evade everyone and head west into the thick bush where she couldn’t be found, this time it was a good thing as we had picked up a puncture on our back wheel. Nothing we couldn’t fix! Back on our vehicle we headed to Simbambili dam for some sundowners to celebrate our findings. In the meanwhile Sean hand his group went for sundowners at big dam but had some company half way through. Lamula joined them half way thru the drinks stop; luckily they were close to the vehicle and could enjoy his company. After the sundowners we headed back to camp exited for the morning drive!

Just before dawn we headed out. We were very pleasantly surprised with the presence of a big male lion just west of JC brink pan on Gowrie main, he was one of the Matimba males! We only saw him for a few seconds before he headed north into torchwood but exited and glad we were none the less but he was not done showing off his size as he returned onto Gowrie for the last time as he moved off south allowing us to have a quick glimpse before he wondered off. We ended the morning drive with a bull elephant on our drive way. Unfortunately it was not all good news today, we received news that Wabahisa the male leopard was attacked by the Styx pride somewhere in little gowrie, he has a broken back leg (uncertain on which side) and does not sound like he will make it! But we are hoping for the best.
