7 - 8 June
What a way to start your cycle in the bush! Being back on
drives after just over two weeks was a blessing indeed. These past two drives
delivered us the big five.
Yesterday afternoon we left camp where I did not
know who was more eager to start drive, me or my guests. Barely even started
and we came across a huge herd of elephant right next to the lodge moving
eastward behind the lodge. We spent some time with them as we started the drive
a bit later than usual, soon after we headed towards the Styx on the buffalo
kill, which everyone had already seen on their way in as it is right beside the
main road towards the lodge, non the less always nice to see lions.
This
morning everyone was dressed to fight off the chilling temperatures which would
be much colder in an open moving vehicle, but it was not long before the
excitement started to warm the bodies.
Bernard found Xivambelane heading north
from Jacobin just north west from the lodge, we made haste to see the marvellous
feline before he disappeared, but on our way we came across a herd of buffalo crossing
gowrie main towards the south, it was a big herd of buffalo reaching numbers of
400 or so, but we had a leopard sighting to attend so decided to come back afterwards.
As we got the leopard he was sniffing about marking his territory where he soon
after curled up to escape the cold, pushing his nose down to keep it warm,
lucky for us we had blankets. After we sat with the cat and moved thru the herd
of buffalo we decided to have a quick look at the Styx, as we approached the
lions were having buffalo for breakfast and my guess is they will be having the
same for lunch and dinner as well. It’s good to be back!
